For sale: a rare, beautifully restored vintage French-made Buffet professional S-1 wood clarinet. Both joints are stamped with the same serial number 1403XX, which indicates the year of manufacture to be 1973, during the Buffet ‘Golden Era’.The ‘S-1’ model was the top of the line professional clarinets offered by Buffet Crampon as an alternative to their R13. In the early 1970’s Buffet came out with the S-1 and later with the RC to offer models with different tonal qualities along with the R-13. The S-1 can be described as somewhat of a ‘throwback’ to the past, trying to bring back tonal characteristics of the pre-1955 (when Robert Carree introduced his revolutionary design) professional clarinets.

Buffet Crampon Clarinet R13 Serial Numbers

This model features an inverse taper in the barrel and less undercutting and slightly smaller size of the tone holes compared to those in R13, to give it a more focused, sweeter and mellower sound. The S-1 clarinets are easy blowing, are known for their excellent intonation throughout all the registers and especially in the upper octaves and the throat-tone. They are also very enjoyable to play – some say more so than a typical R13.The serial number of this clarinet falls under the most desirable range of the Golden Era: from 83,000 to 200,000 (1965 to 1979) – the cream of the crop. The main reason why the ‘Golden era’ Buffet clarinets are coveted and sought after by the players is the quality of the grenadilla wood these instruments were made of: the wood was allowed to air dry for 20 years or more to ensure that the clarinet won’t crack and was of the finest grade, very hard, dense and naturally dark. These days, the methods of drying the wood have changed to accommodate the higher volumes of production (kiln-dried) and the wood is used for the current R-13 is less dense and stained black to hide imperfections. Only the top of the line models, such as Prestige, Tosca and Divine currently offer similar quality of wood.

Other than the exquisite quality of wood and outstanding craftsmanship, these clarinets are highly coveted by players because of their fantastic intonation and the tone quality. The clarinet was just completely overhauled using the highest quality materials available to achieve longest life, a perfect seal and the best sound reflection. The pads on the bottom joint were upgraded to high quality American-made white Prestini kid leather pads. Accepted Payment Methods. Buffet R13 Clarinet Serial Number Chart

This is an vintage professional Buffet clarinet. The prior owner has left this mortal coil and it is now up for sale.If I read the charts correctly, serial number F72750 puts the year of manufacture at 1962. While the “F” in the serial number may mean it was made for the European market, it plays well in tune (A=440)While this clarinet has play wear in the form of wear to the key plating and various nicks in the Grenadilla wood body, it is in very good playing condition. It has been gone over and pads and corks have been replaced as needed.

The wood is good, no cracks or splits.Upper and lower joint are both marked with the serial number. I measure the barrel length at just over 65mm.

Assumedly, both the barrel and bell are original to the horn. The case is solid, but not otherwise noteworthy.Shipping not included in price.Don’t try buying this online directly from the website. Please drop me an e-mail.Check out this clarinet’s big brother, an.And I have another Bb R13 for sale.
